{"id":620,"date":"2020-09-29T10:35:50","date_gmt":"2020-09-29T10:35:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zuccatoenergia.it\/?page_id=620"},"modified":"2026-03-13T15:09:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T14:09:27","slug":"organic-rankine-cycle","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/zuccatoenergia.it\/en\/organic-rankine-cycle\/","title":{"rendered":"Organic Rankine Cycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"col-md-12\">\n<p>All systems produced by Zuccato Energia are based on the\u00a0<b>organic Rankine cycle<\/b>, a high-efficiency thermodynamic cycle that takes its name from its inventor, the Scottish physicist\u00a0<b>W.J.Macquorn Rankine<\/b>\u00a0(1820-1872), one of the fathers of thermodynamics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-md-7 ORCMain\">\n<h2 class=\"ORC_MainTitle\">Working Principle<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ORC_MainTxt\">The Rankine cycle &#8211; and in particular the\u00a0<i>organic<\/i>\u00a0Rankine cycle, has characteristics that make it ideal for heat recovery and the exploitation of low-temperature heat sources in general. Its working principle is simple, but it is better explained through a schematic (see above):<\/p>\n<p class=\"ORC_MainTxt\"><b>Heat<\/b>\u00a0(<span class=\"badge orcbkg\">Q<sub>in<\/sub><\/span>) is conveyed to an\u00a0<b>heat exchanger<\/b>\u00a0(<span class=\"badge orcbkg\">2<\/span>) called\u00a0<i>evaporator<\/i>, increasing the temperature of a\u00a0<b>working fluid<\/b>\u00a0circulating into it. In the original Rankine cycle this working fluid was just water going into steam, but in the\u00a0<i>organic<\/i>\u00a0Rankine cycle, it is instead an organic fluid with a boiling point far below that of water &#8211; which in Zuccato Energia plants is also\u00a0<b>non- toxic, non-flammable and ozone-friendly<\/b>.<br \/>\nThis fluid, when exposed to heat, expands into a\u00a0<b>high pressure dry gas<\/b>\u00a0(<span class=\"badge orcbkg\">3<\/span>) that spins a\u00a0<b>turbine<\/b>\u00a0generating mechanical energy (<span class=\"badge orcbkg\">W<sub>turbine<\/sub><\/span>).In our plants, this energy is converted into electricity by a direct-drive generator mounted on the turbine impeller shaft, and the electricity is then output to the grid or used in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ORC_MainTxt\">On exiting the turbine the working fluid &#8211; now in gas form &#8211; is then conveyed to a second\u00a0<b>heat exchanger<\/b>\u00a0(<span class=\"badge orcbkg\">4<\/span>), called\u00a0<i>condenser<\/i>, where it sheds its excess heat condensing back into a liquid. The liquid working fluid is then pumped back into the evaporator heat exchanger by a specific pump (<span class=\"badge orcbkg\">1<\/span>), thus completing the closed ORC loop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ORC_MainTxt\"><b>Excess heat<\/b>\u00a0released in the condenser (<span class=\"badge orcbkg\">Q<sub>out<\/sub><\/span>) is in itself an\u00a0<b>exploitable thermal resource<\/b>\u00a0which can be used directly, e.g. to\u00a0<b>preheat fuel<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0<b>dessiccate biomass<\/b>\u00a0about to be burned, thus reducing its water content and increasing its energy value.
